Kazakhstan diminished the volume of potato exports by 50%, increasing its imports by 2.6 times in the first eight months of 2021.
Andriy Yarmak, economist at the Investment Centre of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO): “2021 is a very unusual year for the potato market in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It started with a relatively low price level in many countries of the region, except for the Russian Federation, as due to lockdowns, there was again an excess of potatoes in Europe, that were not demanded by the producers of French fries.”
“These potatoes were exported by EU countries, especially the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany at very low prices. Weather conditions during the growing season of potatoes also turned out to be unfavorable in such large producing countries as Russia and Belarus. Therefore, potato prices soared to record levels during the harvesting and the impressive imports started.”
