If you’ve always wanted to own Australia’s famous Big Potato, here’s your chance. Owners Heather and Neil Tait, who own the supermarket next door, have put the land housing the potato up for sale.
The big spud, located at 80 Hoddle Street in the town of Robertson has a price guide of $920,000. Modelled on the Sebago potato variety, the Big Potato was built in the mid-1970s by potato grower Jim Mauger.
The Taits bought the 2000sqm site in 2014 for $450,000, with the aim of using the property to expand their supermarket. The selling agent is Steve Myers of Myers Realty.
“The owners have now decided to sell everything and retire,” he said. “They’ve been with the supermarket nearly 30 years now. They’re selling everything, and there’s a few options. You could buy them individually… You could buy the Big Potato and the site that it sits on, you can buy the supermarket, and obviously the site, the freehold there, or you could buy the business.”
Mr Tait said they sold plenty of Big Potato-themed souvenirs, so it “has the potential to earn a quid”.
“Maybe they could put a coffee shop inside it, or sell potatoes with sour cream out of it,” he said. Mr Myers said buyers would be able to remove the Big Potato if they wished. The Big Potato is 10m long and 4m wide.
He said they’d received plenty of interest in the site during recent weeks.
