Usually at this time of year, many potato industry folks in Scotland head to the Perth Racecourse for a day of potato chat, a mix of forward looking speakers, up to date research and more. This year, it’s not going to be possible to all meet. Instead, there will be an online conference spread over two afternoons, starting today.
During these sessions the prospects for the crop in the future will be in the spotlight. Presentations by Patrick Hughes and Cedric Porter on the prospects for exports and the effects of Covid-19 on the potato market will be first on the agenda. Cedric’s knowledge of world markets will provide some pointers for what the future holds for the GB potato sector. The first session will be concluded with a view direct from Western Australia with Keith Taylor.
After a short break, participants will have the opportunity to challenge a panel of renowned experts and industry figures to outline where they think the challenges and opportunities of the future lie. What do we really need to be thinking of in 10 years’ time? What will be the pressures on the sector and who will be able to capitalise on the opportunities? We are hoping for a lively and interesting debate spanning the Atlantic, with a mix of commercial and research interests represented.

Session 2: What is the greatest future opportunity for the potato sector? (16:30 – 18:00)
Join Jonathan Snape (James Hutton Ltd), Dr Nora Olsen (University of Idaho), Professor Derek Stewart (James Hutton Institute), Adrian Cunnington (AHDB Sutton bridge) and Shamal Mohammed (Agri-Epi) as they debate the issues. Dr Stuart Wale (SRUC) will be in the chair and putting the panel on the spot with your questions. Be prepared to vote and join in with questions.
