The unsolved mystery of the Wayland baked potatoes - Boston.com

As if out of a Sherlock Holmes novel or an Agatha Christie classic, a mystery emerged outside the Wayland Free Public Library last week and has since gained national attention.

“Calling all sleuths! The front lawn of the library has been accumulating what appear to be perfectly lovely baked russets,” the local librarians explained in a Facebook post on Jan. 14.

One potato, two potatoes. Calling all sleuths! The front lawn of the library has been accumulating what appear to be…

The first potato appeared in the grass early on Jan. 11, staffers said.

Just two days later a second spud popped up.

“None of us can imagine how they got here…part of a rare potato migration? Kid on a bus revolted by a packed lunch?” the librarians speculated in their post. “Maybe one of you, if not able to solve this mystery definitively, perhaps you can come up with [a] more fanciful explanation!”

From a nearby raccoon foraging in someone’s compost heap to a friendly black bear leaving offerings for literature, people chimed in with their theories.

A game of hot potato gone awry?” one person questioned.

“It’s just napping before taking its daily stroll on the walking trail,” another guessed.

Someone even mentioned another strange occurrence about a mile north of the library where potatoes were showing up on a grassy strip.

“Is someone trying to promote a book in some weird way?” another person suspected.

Others responded with witty puns, one person offered a Mr. Potato Head meme and wondered if the library had a Potato-Cam to catch the culprit, while a couple commenters even shared some self-described “bad potato poetry.”

News of the local mystery quickly made it to the national spotlight as Stephen Colbert joked about the likelihood of the vegetables responding to a “primal potato call to assemble for the great potato uprising” on The Late Show.

He offered his own outlandish takes on the potatoes’ arrival and then joked about forensics rushing to the scene with bacon bits.

“If you think this is just some funny isolated potato incident you’re adorable,” Colbert said. “And while I have nothing to do with this, in the interest of full-disclosure I think I should reveal that ‘potato occurrences’ was the name of my college poetry slam collective.”

The truth behind the starchy spuds’ appearance and origin has yet to be uncovered. But Assistant Director of the library Andy Moore told WHDH 7 News Boston that since the suspicious vegetables haven’t caused any harm, staffers plan to leave them right where they are for now.

“In memoriam, for people who want to make a pilgrimage,” Moore said. “For people who want to pay homage.”
