Cop uses potato chip bag and tape in 'MacGyver' move to save stabbing victim's life - New York Post

An NYPD officer channeled his inner “MacGyver” when he used an empty potato chip bag and some duct tape to save a young man who was stabbed in the chest in Harlem.

Officer Ronald Kennedy was one of several cops from the 28th Precinct who arrived at 290 Lenox Ave. on July 7 to find a 29-year-old man bleeding from the chest and torso saying, “They caught me in my lung.”

Kennedy, according to dramatic and graphic footage from his body cam posted on Twitter, took charge immediately, directing a young male bystander to get him life-saving supplies.

“Go get me a bag of potato chips, right now!” Harrison barks on the video. He then sends the same good Samaritan to get duct tape a minute later.

Harrison then asked some of the people around the victim to help place him on his back on the ground.

“Two people, over here, right now!” Harrison commanded. “Lay him down! Help me lay him down!”

Harrison then went to work on what looked like impromptu street surgery, using a knife to affix the chip bag and tape into a makeshift tourniquet on the victim’s chest. The victim’s white shirt, smeared with blood, was removed in the process.

“We got you, we got you, don’t touch!” Kennedy told the victim. “Stay with me, stay with me!”

He also told the victim to “keep breathing, bro!” as paramedics came with a stretcher to bring him to Harlem Hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition.

“This is just one example of the heroic work that your NYPD officers do every day,” tweeted Chief Rodney Harrison.

Police officials said the victim survived, but had no further details on his current condition.

They arrested Eric Rodriguez, 38, and charged him with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of weapon, police said.

Rodriguez and the victim, whom police did not identify, had been involved in a dispute when the victim was stabbed.
