An officer with the New York Police Department is being hailed for his “MacGyver” efforts after he saved a victim of a stabbing utilizing a potato chip bag and duct tape.
Officer Ronald Kennedy, a former EMT, utilized the unconventional tactic on July 7 when he and his partner were flagged down by a bystander outside of Chopped Cheese deli in central Harlem. Caught on bodycam footage, the two officers found a 29-year-old victim suffering from a stab wound to the right side of his chest.
“We requested a bag of potato chips and some tape, ’cause we knew right away that we needed to seal the chest,” Kennedy said at a Tuesday press conference, according to the New York Post. “There was a puncture wound there … we didn’t want the air going in it, collapsing his lung.”
In the footage, Kennedy yells to a bystander, “Go get me a bag of potato chips, right now!” Kennedy is then seen dumping the potato chips from the bag before smoothing it out and flattening it over the wound and taping it into place.

“We got you, we got you, don’t touch!” Kennedy tells the victim. “Stay with me, stay with me! Keep breathing, bro!”
The victim was transported to the hospital, where he is expected to fully recover.
“Here, Officer Kennedy, who’s a volunteer fireman, utilized his EMT skills to arguably, probably save the life of this victim with something as simple as a bag of potato chips and some tape,” Deputy Inspector Andre Brown said.
Eric Rodriguez, 38, was arrested in relation to the stabbing and charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
