‘These are taters of chaos!’: Stephen Colbert shouts out Wayland, Massachusetts library where potatoes keep m - MassLive.com

Spuds that keep mysteriously showing up on the lawn of a Massachusetts library have caught the attention of one of the country’s most-watched political satirists and late night talk-show hosts.

During his Wednesday night episode of “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert gave a shoutout to the Wayland Free Public Library, where staff members have been finding what they described as “perfectly lovely baked russets” on the building’s front lawn for the past week.

“One potato, two potatoes. Calling all sleuths!,” the library wrote in a Facebook post. “None of us can imagine how they got here... Part of a rare potato migration? Kid on a bus revolted by a packed lunch? It’s such a dreary day, maybe one of you, if not able to solve this mystery definitively, perhaps you can come up with more fanciful explanation!”

In Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show, titled “Quarantinewhile... White Castle Won’t Let Covid Ruin Valentine’s Day,” Colbert took a few minutes to poke fun at the quirky mystery going on in Wayland, along with other lighter news stories of the new year.

“This is the kind of news I’m hoping to spend more time thinking about in 2021, because in Wayland, Massachusetts, librarians are mystified by potatoes gathering on the library’s front lawn,” Colbert said. “I think the words you’re looking for are ‘accumulating’ or ‘appearing.’ ‘Gathering’ implies they’re responding to some sort of primal potato call to assemble for the great potato uprising.”

“Arise my fellow tubers! Never again will they sprinkle us with chives! The cream may be sour, but our revenge will be sweet!,” the comedian added.

One potato appeared on the front lawn of the building last Monday, according to the library’s post, and a second spud cropped up two days later.

Colbert in his segment teased wording used in WBZ’s article on the puzzling tuber discoveries that described the spuds as “random potatoes.”

“Yes, random. These potatoes are neither expected nor orderly. These are taters of chaos!,” the talk-show host said.

Patch reported that Wayland Free Public Library Director Sandy Raymond found the first potato Monday while walking around the grounds of the building. She came upon the second tater while getting steps in Tuesday, according to the news outlet.

“That’s how vicious this crime is. She’s trying to get her steps in, and some sicko is taunting her with carbs,” Colbert joked.

“You know we’re only hearing about this because of the second potato. If it was one potato, the mainstream media would totally ignore it. But two potatoes, that’s a clear pattern of po-terrorism,” he added.

The Late Show host joked at the end of his segment that the story of the so-called “random potatoes” is not over yet.

“There’s more potato story coming,” Colbert said, “because if you think this is just some funny, isolated little potato incident, you’re adorable.”
