Geddes, N.Y. — Solvay firefighters stationed at the New York State Fair responded to a fire at a baked potato booth Sunday afternoon, officials said.
Dripping grease in an oven at the Baked Potato Express booth sparked the fire shortly after 2 p.m., fair spokesman Dave Bullard said.
Employees at the booth were baking baked potatoes when the fire started, Bullard said. No one was injured, and the fire was contained inside the oven and it did not spread, he said.
The Solvay Fire Department maintains a station at the fairgrounds so “they were there within a minute or two to put this fire out,” Bullard said.
The fire station is on the west end of the fair behind Indian Village. Bullard estimated firefighters were about 500 to 600 feet from the baked potato booth when the oven caught fire. They quickly put out the fire, he said.
The Baked Potato Express booth is owned by a private vendor. It is stationed just outside the Expo Center at the fair.
After the fire was cleaned up, the Department of Health inspected the booth and said the Baked Potato Express can reopen Monday, Bullard said.
“It appears to have been an issue of dripping grease,” Bullard said.
