The potato planting is still underway in Spain, despite temporary interruptions by the rain in some regions and difficulties to market stored potatoes, both for the processing industry and for fresh consumption.
Asia dominates world potato production
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimated that the 158 countries for which it has data cultivated 17,580,000 hectares in 2018; 7.9% less than in 2017 (9,099,000 hectares). The biggest changes were recorded in China and Russia. It is estimated that 4,813,000 hectares were cultivated in China in 2018 (1% less than in 2017), with a production totaling 90,321,000 tons.
The report highlights that Ukraine became the world's second largest producer (after India), displacing Russia, which grew 22,395,000 tons of potatoes in 2018 on 1,313,000 hectares. Also, France expanded its acreage by 25,000 hectares, and Canada achieved a greater production.
The only continent that saw an increase in its potato acreage in 2018 was Africa (by 3.3%, to 1,904,000 hectares), which may displace North America in 2020 as the third largest potato producer.
More than half of the world's potatoes were grown in Asia in 2018, while Europe accounted for 30%.
European countries
Europe continues to consolidate itself in terms of production. Together, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom accounted for half of the European acreage in 2018 and 60% of their potato production. If Poland is added to the list, the six countries account for two thirds of the acreage and almost three quarters of the European production.
