Fancy supplies aren’t necessary for your little artist, and using what’s lying around can open up new imaginative possibilities. A potato and paint – and adult supervision – can be a wonderful craft opportunity for kids.
Cut a potato in half vertically, blot it on a paper towel for a few seconds, and have them draw an outline for a simple shape – a circle, square, rectangle, star, etc. – and hand the potato over to the parent.
Use a knife to carve around the shape – think Jack O’Lantern carving, potato edition – and then carve around the potato about a half-inch down, careful not to cut off the “stamp.”
Hand it back to the kids, and let them go wild. They might want to squirt paint onto a plate and just cover the potato, which is a great option. Potato stamps are the perfect size and shape for tiny, uncoordinated hands.
For the more meticulous child, a fun idea is to use a paintbrush to paint different colors or patterns directly onto the stamp. For example, an oval stamp with red and black paint could easily transform on paper to a ladybug.
If your kid wants even greater detail, they can wait for the stamp to dry and go in for a second layer of paint. Give the ladybug eyes, more spots, etc.
Children can modify their stamp by using whatever is at hand – the tip of a pencil, for example – to create different textures within the stamp.
While they’re at it, why not check out the patterns other produce can … well, produce. A great choice is apples, and, with no special carving involved, the core with its seeds forms a lovely pattern on paper.
If you use a larger piece of paper, you can have their creation laminated at a future date and repurposed as a placemat during mealtimes. After all, what’s a better usage of potato art?
