Peru produced 5,300,000 tons of potatoes in 2019, i.e. 3.92% more than the 5,100,000 tons it produced in 2018, according to the president of the consulting firm Inform@cción, Fernando Cilloniz Benavides. The production of this tuber has grown considerably since 2000 when it totaled 3,250,000 tons.
The main producing regions in 2019 were Puno with 838,776,670 kilos (800,000T in 2018), Huanuco with 700,000T (650,000 T in 2018), La Libertad with almost 550,000T kilos (500,000T in 2018), Cusco with 440,000T (390,000T in 2018), and Apurimac with 410,000T kilos (437,000T in 2018).
In 2019 Peru had 327,000 hectares devoted to potato production, i.e. 0.6% more than the 325,000 hectares it had in 2018. In 2000 there were only 285,000 hectares of potatoes.
The regions with the largest area devoted to potato production in 2019 were: Puno with 60,000 hectares (60,000 hectares in 2018), Huanuco with 43,000 hectares (41,000 hectares in 2018), Cusco with 31,500 ha (30,500 ha in 2018), Huancavelica with 27,500 ha (25,000 ha in 2018), and Cajamarca with 27,500 ha (28,500 ha in 2018).
Imports
According to Cilloniz, in 2019 Peru imported 52,676 tons of potatoes for 52 million dollars, while in 2018 the country imported 57,000 tons worth 50 million dollars. "The country only imports a volume that is equal to 1% of the national production."
Peru's main potato suppliers were the Netherlands with 20,000,000 kilos (39% of the total), the United States with 15.9% of the total, Germany with 13.5%, Denmark, and France, among others.
Exports
In 2019, Peru exported 544,416 kilos of potatoes for 3.3 million dollars, while in 2018 it exported 476,393 kilos for 2.7 million dollars.
The main destinations were Latin America with 434,354 kilos, North America with 78,083 kilos, Europe 31,594 with kilos, and Asia with 383 kilos.
“Potato exports are increasing every year. Hopefully, in the future we can export a greater volume of native potatoes, yellow potatoes, and special potatoes," Cilloniz stated.
