A French woman has returned home after spending coronavirus quarantine with her boyfriend to find a “mutant potatoes” taking over her apartment.

Donna Porée, 22, discovered the alien-like bag of spuds with metre-long roots growing under her kitchen shelf and posted photos on Twitter.

“After 3 months of absence, my potatoes decided to push without limit until making holes in the joints,” she said on in June.

The potatoes have taken over so much of Ms Porée’s 22-square-metre flat, and gave her quite a shock when she first returned home.

“I was terrified at first, but after realising what it was I laughed a lot and shared a video of the plant on Snapchat,” Ms Porée told The Mirror.

“My friends couldn’t stop laughing. They found the whole situation unbelievable,” she added.

Almost 200,000 people have responded to the images on Twitter, with many describing it as their “worst nightmare”.

“I don't know if I find it beautiful or if I'm scared but damn, it's super impressive,” one Twitter user responded.

“What the hell is it trying to do? It’s terrifying,” another said.

“It’s a mutant potato,” a third person declared.

The roots of the potatoes had pierced their way through shelving and the kitchen bench, attaching itself to parts of the wall.

Ms Porée told The Mirror it took hours to clean up the mess.

“The shoots had fixed in place in the joints and were difficult to remove, I ended up having to cut some of the shoots out with scissors and I had to fill in the holes they made,” she said.

The horrifying experience hasn’t turned her off potatoes though.

The 22-year-old told The Mirror she has replanted some of the roots in her vegetable garden.

“I’m eager to see what will come out of the ground,” she said.
