Like the rest of the industry, Nash Produce has learned how to adjust to the world’s new normal. Around its facility, all team members are practicing social distancing, following proper health screening protocols, and learning a lot about new technology outlets that more effectively connect the company with customers.
“It is a huge privilege to be able to continue providing our customers with a safe, nutritious product in a time of such uncertainty,” said Rebecca Scott, grower accounting and marketing director for the Nashville, NC-based company. “Business has been steady. Growers have been gearing up for this year’s sweet potato crop and the fields are coming alive with plants at all stages of growth. It is encouraging to see the foodservice sector improving week-to-week, while our retail partners have been real troopers with increased traffic since the pandemic began.”
Nash Produce is currently in the middle of its pickling cucumber season, which began toward the end of May.
“Unseasonably cool weather in April and May pushed us out a few days later than our normal harvest, but the quality of cucumbers has been spectacular,” Scott said. “The 2021 sweet potato crop is underway and plants are getting the ideal weather conditions needed for healthy growth. North Carolina summer is officially in full gear with hot, humid temperatures and optimal rainfall. We are optimistic for a successful, on schedule harvest.”
As always, the weather is an unpredictable challenge that the company’s growers work around on a daily basis. Fortunately, North Carolina is providing ideal conditions lately and Scott hopes it remains that way throughout the growing season.
Nash Produce is owned by farmers, for farmers and Scott noted the company’s commitment to customers is the not-so-secret to its success.
“Every member of our team works toward the common goal of making each and every customer our top priority,” she said. “Our experienced staff, dedicated group of growers, and large facility allow us to provide exceptional service to our customers while also providing sweet potatoes year-round. Even though our potatoes travel all over the world, every potato we pack comes from local family farms in neighboring counties. We are truly a unified family of growers and employees that work together to meet and exceed expectations from the sweet potato field to consumer’s dinner plates.”
Over the past few months, Nash Produce has been working on several projects that will allow the company to enhance many stages of its production.
“Back in March, we launched a personalized transportation management system to improve logistic efficiency and over the past few months, we have expanded our machinery to include a new bagging system as well as have introduced a new bulk loader and scale,” Scott said.
Additionally, it has recognized the increased movement of its 3- and 5-pound mesh bags due to consumer interest in grab-and-go convenience as a result of COVID-19.
“This option reduces the amount of time spent in the produce aisle while providing ease in handling,” Scott said. “Our new bagging machine has been and will continue to be a huge asset.”
Nash Produce will be part of the virtual PMA Foodservice event and is looking forward to seeing the different advantages of attending a virtual show.
“It will be different, but we look forward to having an opportunity to connect with new faces that we may not otherwise have had the chance to meet in person,” Scott said. “We have been working on a sweet potato and cucumber video that will give viewers a glimpse into our production from seed to finished product. Our team is excited to show this to new and present customers due to the lack of travel because of the pandemic.”
