Ted Kreis, marketing and communications director with the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association, said while it’s exciting to be back, the ongoing pandemic means things aren’t fully back to normal.
“It's good to be back, but it's also created some challenges for us this year,” he said.
Kreis said there’s been a lot of planning involved with a typical Potato Bowl celebration, but this year has been even more challenging with the pandemic.
Potato Bowl USA’s signature event will have a new look this year as free hot dogs and potato chips will take the place of french fries at the Thursday, Sept. 16, gathering in University Park from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The J.R. Simplot Company based in Boise, Idaho will not be a part of the annual french fry feed because of COVID-19 concerns.
The Potato Bowl Committee has decided to move forward with the event which this year will be called “Potato Bowl in the Park” with an alternate menu consisting of a free hot dog and potato chips.
Other events will also be a bit different. The fireworks display will be held Friday, Sept. 17, at dusk near the Sorlie Bridge in downtown Grand Forks. It’s a new location for the fireworks display, which was previously done at the now demolished Memorial Stadium.
Road construction has forced the Potato Bowl to move its parade to University Avenue several times in the past five years. However, the parade will once again take place on DeMers Avenue through downtown Grand Forks and East Grand Forks starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.
The Potato Bowl golf tournament, Sons of Norway potato pancake feed and the Rotary Club pancake feed will not take place.
The Fighting Hawks will take on Drake University at the Alerus Center on Saturday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. It will be the home opener for UND.
On Sept. 24, 1966, the very first Potato Bowl football game was played at Memorial Stadium and was billed as a battle between two of the largest potato growing regions in the United States (Idaho and the Red River Valley).
The idea of creating a week of festivities to celebrate potatoes and football was the brainchild of UND Athletic Director Len Marti, Head Football Coach Marv “Whitey” Helling, Assistant Football Coach Jerry Olson and Sports Information Director Lee Bohnet. In that first game in 1966, UND beat Idaho State 41-0. UND is 41-13 in its first 54 Potato Bowl games.
